This year Valentine’s Day kinda crept up on me. Despite having been single every other Valentine’s Day since I came of age, there is usually some anticipation in the back of my mind this time of year. I imagine how my future guy and I might celebrate, like would we go all out and come up with creative, tear-jerking ways to affirm our affections or would we try to rise above the social pressure to make public declarations and come up with our own rhythm of displays of affection...? Just yesterday I remembered that Valentine’s Day was today yet I felt so indifferent. No dreaming, no pang of sadness at having no one to expect gifts and trinkets from.. just another day. I paused. Had singleness made me stop believing in the beauty and thrill of falling in love? Had I stopped picturing a future with someone and instead begun to try to make my life as colourful as possible in case I end up alone in my future living room portrait? It’s been an interesting few years, to say the least.

One afternoon as I went through my 'Soulful' playlist, a thought came to mind as I listened to one of my all-time favourites; Lana del Rey- 'Young and Beautiful'. Do obscenely good-looking people ever worry that their beauty is not enough..? Next came 'Pretty Hurts' by Beyonce and I wondered if she actually lived out those words and rebelled against the status quo, how much of a difference that would make to her daughter, and to how her legions of fans perceive her.   I consider myself a moderate consumer of pop culture with an innate confidence, and yet I am no stranger to the allures of the glossy and glamorous lifestyle. Women's Day 8 March

8 March was International Women's Day.  No doubt some guys grumbled and wondered why Men's Day doesn't exist and why women need yet another day to feel extra pleased with themselves. Feminism is portrayed like a hobby undertaken by frigid women who hate men and needless to say, this is an ignorant stereotype. I am not here to argue women's superiority but simply to advocate the truth about why they are indispensable and why their causes and issues are issues all mankind should be concerned about. God created the woman and made her life-giver and helper because he saw that it was not good for man to be alone. After the Original Sin, women were forever cursed with the pain of child-bearing and emotional conflict at the hands of men (Genesis 3:16).
